Dentures and Partial Dentures

A denture is a dental appliance that can be removed and serves as a replacement for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Designed to closely mimic the appearance of your natural teeth, dentures can even enhance the aesthetics of your smile.

Improve Your Smile

Dentures serve as removable dental appliances, providing a replacement for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. They are meticulously crafted to closely resemble your natural teeth, offering the potential to enhance your smile.

There are two primary types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are utilized when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are employed when some natural teeth still remain. Aside from filling in the gaps caused by missing teeth, partial dentures also prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.

Complete dentures can be categorized as either “conventional” or “immediate.” Conventional dentures are fabricated after the teeth have been extracted, allowing for a healing period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks. During this phase, the patient may be without teeth. On the other hand, immediate dentures are created in advance and are promptly placed after the teeth extraction, eliminating the need for the patient to be toothless during the healing process. However, adjustments will be required as the tissues shrink and heal.

Dentures are durable appliances with a considerable lifespan, but normal wear and tear may necessitate occasional remaking, repairs, or readjustments. For any inquiries or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact Fontana Dental Care.

Why Use Dentures?

  • Complete denture: When all teeth are lost in a dental arch, a complete denture is used as a replacement.

  • Partial denture: In cases of partial tooth loss in a dental arch, a partial denture is utilized.

  • Enhancing smile and facial tissues: Dentures not only replace missing teeth but also contribute to the enhancement of the smile and facial appearance.

  • Improving chewing, speech, and digestion: Dentures play a vital role in improving the ability to chew food, articulate speech clearly, and facilitate proper digestion.

What Does Getting Dentures Involve?

The process of obtaining dentures typically involves multiple appointments spread over several weeks. During these visits, precise and accurate impressions (molds) are taken, along with measurements, to create a customized denture that suits you. To ensure the perfect shape, color, and fit, several “try-in” appointments may be necessary. Finally, at the last appointment, your dentist will make precise adjustments and securely place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

Initially, you may experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and potential difficulties in speech and chewing. However, as your muscles and tissues adapt to the new dentures, these issues will gradually diminish.

Upon receiving your dentures, you will receive detailed care instructions. Proper cleaning of your dental appliance, practicing good oral hygiene, and maintaining regular dental visits are crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your dentures.
